Italian table linens, made as one table

Most tables end up assembled rather than set. You find a runner you like, then go looking for napkins to go with it, and settle for a red that turns out to be a different red. The table comes together, and you can still see the seams.

Studio WGS draws each design once and prints it across the whole line — runner, placemats, napkins, tea towel, apron, doormat. The lemons on the napkins are the same lemons as the ones on the runner, from the same file, in the same colors. Choose a design once and the table follows.

What goes on the table

A table needs less than most people think: something down the middle, something under each plate, something in each hand. Start with the runner, since it sets the length of the table and everything else is measured against it. Every piece is sold on its own, so a line can be built one piece at a time.

Table runners

Two lengths, 16 by 72 inches and 16 by 90, hemmed all the way around. You pick the fabric at checkout: cotton twill prints quieter and reads more classic, polyester prints sharper and brighter.

Placemats and cloth napkins

Placemats are 18 by 14 inches, cut from two layers of cotton twill so they lie flat and carry some weight. Napkins come in 10 by 10 and 22 by 22 inches and are sold singly — most cloth napkins are sold in fours, which decides the size of your table for you.

Italian kitchen decor

Waffle-weave tea towels at 16 by 25 inches, one-size aprons in polyester canvas with a buckle at the neck and ties at the back, and eight of the designs on tufted coir doormats. The same drawing that sits on the table carries through to the counter and the front door.

Choosing a style

Four collections, and the fastest way in is by occasion. Italian Summer has the loudest designs — spritz and limoncello labels, moka pots — and it suits long lunches and aperitivo hour. Mediterranean is olives, tomatoes and garlic: what most people picture when they picture the Mediterranean, and it carries both an intimate dinner party and a Tuesday. Botanical brings the garden to the table, artichokes and eggplant drawn large. Provence is the French end of it, lavender and sunflowers. If you are buying for someone else, the produce designs travel best.

Common questions

What are Italian table linens?

The textiles that dress a table rather than the things you eat off: a runner down the middle, placemats under each setting, and cloth napkins. In an Italian kitchen the same designs usually carry on past the table — to the tea towel over the oven rail, the apron on the hook. We keep those in the same lines.

Will the pieces match if I buy them separately?

Yes. Each design is one piece of artwork printed across every product in its line, so the runner, the placemats and the napkins carry the same drawing in the same colors. Fabric changes how a color reads — the same red sits deeper on cotton twill than on polyester — but the design itself is identical.

How long should a table runner be?

Long enough to reach the ends of the table, with roughly 6 to 12 inches hanging over each end. The 72 inch runner suits a table of about 48 to 60 inches; the 90 inch runner suits one of about 66 to 78. If you would rather the runner stop level with the table, subtract instead of adding — a runner a few inches short reads as deliberate, one a few inches long does not.

What size is a standard placemat?

Most rectangular placemats fall between 18 by 12 and 19 by 14 inches. Ours are 18 by 14, at the generous end of that range, which leaves room for a plate, a glass and cutlery without the setting crowding itself. Allow about 15 inches per person and set them an inch or two in from the edge.

What is a tea towel?

A flat-woven kitchen cloth for drying glassware, hands and washed produce — and, because it is flat rather than looped, for covering dough or lining a bread basket. That is what separates it from a dish towel or a hand towel: terry loops hold water and leave lint behind, which is what you want on a spill and not on a wine glass.

How do I care for them?

All the textiles machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, without bleach. After that they differ: runners and napkins line dry, placemats stay out of the dryer, tea towels and aprons tumble dry on low. The coir doormats are not washed at all — shake them out. Every product page carries its own care instructions. Everything is made to order, so allow production and shipping time rather than ordering at the last minute.
