Thanksgiving is the one table of the year that usually has to seat more people than it comfortably holds. The leaf goes in, two chairs appear from another room, and everything that fitted in October is suddenly short.

Size up

Take the 90″ runner rather than the 72″, and count placemats after the table is extended rather than before. A runner that was right all autumn will look stranded on a table that grew by eighteen inches.

Dinner napkins, not cocktail

This is a long meal with a full plate. The 22″ napkin is the one that covers a lap properly and still folds into something that looks deliberate beside a crowded setting. Cotton twill washes hot enough to deal with what the meal produces.
