Washable placemats

Every placemat here goes in the machine. Cold wash, no bleach, no tumble dryer, low iron.

That rules out the vinyl, cork and leather mats most people end up wiping rather than washing — and it is the reason a cotton mat outlasts them at a table with children at it.

Frequently asked questions

How exactly do I wash them?

Machine wash cold, do not bleach, do not tumble dry, and iron or steam on low if needed. Do not dry clean. The dryer is the only step that will do real damage — heat sets creases into double-layer cotton.

Will washing fade the print?

No. The color is sublimated into the cotton rather than sitting on the surface, so it will not crack, peel or wash out. The cloth softens with each cycle; the print does not change.

What about a set spill — wine, oil, gravy?

Rinse in cold water first. Hot water sets protein and tannin stains rather than lifting them. A cold soak followed by a normal cold cycle deals with most of what a table produces.
