Round placemats
A round table is the one case where rectangular mats consistently look wrong — the corners fight the curve of the table edge and the settings never space evenly.
If you seat six at a round table, round mats are worth the swap.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a round placemat be?
14 to 15 inches across is the standard. That holds a dinner plate with a margin and still lets six settings sit around a 48″ round table without touching.
Why round mats on a round table?
Corners are the problem. On a round table the corners of a rectangular mat either overhang the edge or point inward at an angle that never quite lines up with the next setting. A round mat follows the table edge instead of arguing with it.
Can I use rectangular mats on a round table?
You can, and it works if you space them evenly around the rim rather than trying to align them to the centre. It reads as a deliberate choice at four settings and as a compromise at six.
