Why black placemats?
Contrast. A white plate on a black mat is the clearest frame you can give a setting, which is why restaurants use it. It also hides red wine and dark sauces better than any pale mat.
Do they show dust and lint?
More than a pale mat, yes. Wash without fabric softener, which is what makes fibres cling in the first place, and shake them out before laying the table.
What size are they?
18″ × 14″, the standard rectangular size, in double-layer cotton with a natural undyed back so they do not mark a polished table.
