When is a square mat the right choice?
Two cases. Square or rectangular plates, which look wrong floating on a landscape mat. And small tables — a bistro table or a two-seat kitchen table where an 18″ rectangle hangs off the front edge.
What size should it be?
Around 14 to 16 inches square. Big enough for a dinner plate and a glass, small enough that four of them fit on a 36″ table without meeting in the middle.
Can I mix square and rectangular mats?
Not on the same table. Mixing prints works; mixing shapes reads as an accident every time.
