22″ × 22″. It is a long meal with a lot on the plate, so you want enough fabric to cover a lap properly and to fold into something that still looks deliberate beside a full setting.
How should I fold them?
For a crowded table, folded in thirds to the left of the plate takes up the least room. If you want something more, a pocket fold that holds the cutlery clears space in front of each guest.
Cloth or paper?
Cloth, on the grounds that this table gets photographed and the napkins get reused every November for years. Cotton twill washes hot enough to deal with what the meal puts on it.
